Jeffrey T. Leonards, Ph.D.

Jeffrey T. Leonards, Ph.D. is a retired psychologist, who, aside from professional texts, has enjoyed a lifelong appreciation of well-crafted literature, fiction and non-fiction alike.

His own journey into creative writing began in late adolescence with a published letter to the local newspaper. Surprised by its reception and encouraged by friends and faculty, he became a frequent guest columnist to his undergraduate newspaper. That served as a springboard, for only a few years later, while still a young graduate student, he had two monographs accepted for publication in peer-reviewed professional journals.

Since then, Jeff hit his stride with both journal articles and guest commentaries to local and national news outlets, and for several years was the editor of The Maine Psychologist, a monthly guild issue.

A newcomer to fiction, Jeff published a debut novel, Fräulein: Struggle for Identity on March 23, 2021. That book, an historical novel, was over four years and close to a hundred books in the making. His second novel, Sigmund Fraud, Licensed Imposter, was published in March, 2023. He has a third novel in the works, tentatively entitled Privileged Communications (more about that in the Books section).

Jeff has found fiction to be an ideal medium for combining 37 years of clinical experience with decades of study in psychology, history, religion, and existential philosophy. This is reflected in characters whose personal values often come in sharp conflict with unforeseen, bewildering challenges. The clashes that ensue typically entail choices: the more profound, the greater the risk of it altering direction in life and reshaping identity in unpredictable and sometimes disturbing ways.

When not writing, Jeff is a dedicated endurance athlete with over 160,000 miles of cycling—the equivalent of 6.5 trips around the earth over the course of 49 years. He is equally passionate about Nordic skiing, holds a first-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do, and was a volunteer ski-patroller at Sunday River Ski Resort. For the past 25 years, he remains a year-round player and coordinator of men’s ice hockey. In 2001, he spearheaded Franklin County Maine’s first indoor youth ice-hockey program, during which he successfully raised promotional grants from the NHL Philadelphia Flyers along with special words of encouragement from the now-late owner, Ed Snider, as well as hall-of-fame superstar (and personal source of inspiration) Bobby Clarke.

Jeff resides with his wife and German Shepherd on the Saco River in Southern Maine.
